Powerful Event in the Northland

Dear Andrew,

Last Thursday night I was in the room when history was made. I joined Rev. Susan McCann and over 250 Northland faith leaders from nearly 30 different congregations to declare our commitment to move dignity to the center of public life. It was the largest, most diverse, and most unified gathering of people of faith the Northland has seen. NBC broadcast live from outside of the event:View the story here.

That night, I said, “We need the rising up of the faith community that burns with a holy passion for the plight of the middle class and the desperation of the poor. These challenges cannot be met by a church devoted exclusively to charity. As important as it is to feed the hungry, it is even more important to address the conditions and the powers that make them hungry.”

And on Thursday night, we saw that happen in Liberty.

Right now our state faces a clear moral choice. Either we will prioritize the dignity and wellbeing of families, or we will continue to cater to the narrow interests of partisanship or big donors. On Thursday night, Rev. McCann challenged Governor Nixon and State Representative Neth to choose.

Now I challenge you. What will you do to make dignity a priority in the Northland, in Kansas City, or in your state?

Please join us March 11th for a Faith and Families Summit in Jefferson City. Join congregations and grassroots groups from across the state who share a vision of economic dignity and racial equity. Together we will stand up for our values and ask our elected leaders to do the same. Together we will move dignity to the center of public life in Missouri. We need you there.

In faith,
The Rev. Dr. Tex Sample
